IBCLC & Nurse JC asked: Does anyone have children or babies who the doctors say are overweight based on a height and weight chart? How do you feel about that? Are you doing anything different to change your child’s diet or increase activity?

Hailey D asked: I saw some report on childhood obesity saying Black and Mexican children are predisposed to become obese because they have more of some chemical than any other kids. I think this has nothing to do with it, and neither does race. I think parents are lazy and in turn their kids are too. They see their children becoming obese and don’t care to do anything about it like maybe change their diet or exercise with them to motivate them.

White Hare asked: Maybe these kids comfort themselves with food because they have attatchment disorders?
rrm38: I think this is precisely the case.
I would like to add to the fact that example is the best, perhaps only teacher. Whether your mom works, part time or full time, or stays home all day, the kids emulate what the mom does and they eat how the mom eats. If mom eats garbage, so do the kids, if mom is inactive, so are the kids.

♥Princess♥ asked: Should these families who have overweight children be referred to Child Protective Services? I think it is very sad that parents allow their children to gain excess amount of weight and I believe these parents should be held accountable for neglecting the overall health of their children.
I’m not referring to children who suffer from a metobolic disorder or any other type of health condition that interferes with weight loss…
* Correction… Metabolic… and btw I am an NP so I am fully aware of various health reasons which would produce weight gain in individuals… again, I am referring to otherwise healthy children who’s parents allow them to over-eat

itsme_randy asked: I was appalled when I saw some overweight BABIES on the Maury Povich show. 2-year-old at 70 lbs, 3-year-old at 80 lbs, 4-year-old at 110 lbs. The mothers sat there and talked about how they put them on diets…of ice cream, potato chips, soda, fried chicken, etc. and gave them all the food the kids wanted. What is wrong with these people? Am I missing something? And the mothers were no skinny minnies either. These little kids are helpless in that they can only eat what their mothers give them. To me, in a way, this is almost like child abuse.

gsmom asked: should they change there eating habits and become more active ? For me i think a child on a diet lowers there self esteem and has so many negative stereotypes.I think saying to a child lets change your eating habits and get more active would have much more positive results than go on a diet your overweight . what do you think ?And no im not picking on overweight children i have an overweight child.

Kathy asked: I am curious to know if conservative Christian parents raise their children in a very tolerant way. Now I do understand that religion plays a big role in how children are raised, and I do not want to seem stereotypical. Do conservative Christians not care about what is on the outside, such as weight?

Betty Sparkles asked: Just saw a mom with a 4-year-old who must weight at least as much or more than my 7-year-old. I felt so sad for the child. After all, isn’t it the parents who have control over the child’s food intake and activity level?
What say you?
