Mom2Max asked:

My son is 17 months old. His pedi told me since his weight was on track, I could feed him 2% milk instead of whole – his stance is that children don’t HAVE to have all that fat.
I realize opinions are conficting – and in 10 years – there will be new rules to parent by.

Now to the point :
My son has discovered Fage yogurt and is in love. The whole yogurt says the container has 45% of the daily allowance of sat fat. This would be for a full grown adult, not a 26 lb toddler. Is this alright to feed a child – or should I opt for a more reduced fat version? I’m not going all Anna Nicole and wanting a ‘thin’ baby. I just know the problems with obesity and high fat diets and wish to curb any problems before they begin.
He is pretty active. I was just wondering if other parents watched the fat intake of children so young – when it is said that Sat fats help with brain development. I have no problem buying reduced fat ones. I just didn’t want to unnecessarily give him ‘diet’ food.

Alice

Natty S asked:

I’m doing an essay called “The UK’s obesity in children – Who’s to blame?” and it’s basically about whether I believe that parents are the cause or whether children are just following society (even though in some cases its a disease that can’t be helped).

I wrote my essay and my tutor gave me feedback, which was that I had to write for my second paragraph a topic sentence, and I just don’t know how to develop it into the way she wants me to, and I’m just seeking some advice.

My paragraph was “Nine out of ten toddlers eat junk food. In the UK, 25% of boys and 33% of girls aged between two and nineteen are overweight or obese, and it’s getting worse rather than improving”

What I need to write is that I believe its mainly the parents doing, but I don’t know how to write it?

Any tips/examples?

Prego! [#4] asked:

So today, I was in the grocery store with all three munchkins in tow. This lady had her son, who was around the same age as my son. He was about the same height as my boy, but he was honestly three times the size of my son. Given, my son is bigger than average himself [ he was eleven pounds at birth] , and he’s seventeen monthes. This little boy looked like he weighed as much as my three year old. He was so big. Do you consider this child abuse, or at least neglect? I understand that some children have disorders, but what about the ones that don’t? And to me, it wasn’t the fact that he was big, but the fact that he had no control over it. I doubt he feeds himself large amounts of high fat foods.

I know that this might offend some people, but I don’t mean it in a bad way. I’m just wondering how other parents feel about it.
I have two boys myself, and a girl. So I understand that everychild is different. Like I said, my son isn’t small. He’s just a big boy. But this child was at an extreme. I understand that he might have a disorder, but every obese child that you see can’t have a disorder. I guess what I’m asking is how do you feel about the parents who DO contribute to the obesity, not the ones whose children have medical problems.

Mike

Elindriel asked:

why do so many parents give young children so much soda and sweets to eat? My own friend thinks that I’m horrible becuase I refuse to feed my kids sweets at all when they are toddlers! Why do people feed 1-3 yr old children sodas, cookies, chips, and other fatty, sugary food? This can’t be good for them, will dehydrate and malnourish them, and predisposes them for obesity later in life!
And I don’t just mean babies and infants. I’m talking about kids of all ages. The reason kids don’t eat healthy is becuase parents didn’t feed them properly to begin with. Children’s horrid eating habits would end if good eating habits where established early on! Right from the get go!

Roberta

They buy family size bags of M&Ms and let her go to town. Their family has a history of obesity and type 2 diabetes. I am not food obsessed, but we try to eat healthy and teach our 2 year old the same. They bring large amounts of junk food to our house that we wouldn’t eat, much less allow our child to eat. We struggle with our weight, too. We have made our food rules clear to them, but they still are feeding her all the time. How do I stop this?

Wesley

What is wrong with these people? Am I missing something? And the mothers were no skinny minnies either. These little kids are helpless in that they can only eat what their mothers give them. To me, in a way, this is almost like child abuse.

Sheila
